Leave a Little Room This afternoon, I tucked the little tin of seeds onto a shelf by the garden door. Not because I was finished with it… But because I wasn’t. Sometimes we don’t need all the answers today. Sometimes it’s enough to leave a little room for tomorrow. A little room on the shelf….
After yesterday’s discovery, I carried the little tin of forgotten seeds out to the garden this morning. I set it beside my favorite mug and wandered through the herb beds, brushing my fingers over the leaves until one familiar lemony scent stopped me in my tracks. Lemon balm. It has a way of reminding me…
This morning, I finally finished tidying the pantry. Well… mostly. There was one last basket tucked onto the highest shelf that I’d been avoiding all week. When I reached for it, a little metal tin slipped free and landed on the floor with the softest clink. Inside were seed packets. Some were neatly labeled in…
Maeve announced that this week would be dedicated to tidying the cottage. Since then, I have observed the following: • One loaf of rosemary bread has disappeared. • A jar of mint sun tea has been brewed by the sun instead of the kettle. • An afternoon was spent collecting blackberries that, according to Maeve,…
The brambles finally offered up their first handful of ripe blackberries this morning. Not enough for jam. Not enough for a pie. Just enough to remind me that summer has settled in. So I carried them home in my basket, added a few more from the garden, and tucked them beneath a blanket of buttery…
Before you tidy a room, open a window. Let the morning breeze wander through the corners. Let yesterday drift outside. Homes, much like hearts, breathe a little easier when fresh air is invited in first. Then put one thing away. Not everything. Just one thing. Tiny rituals have a quiet way of becoming big magic.
Some teas ask for a kettle. Summer asks for a little patience. This morning I filled my favorite glass jar with cool water, a handful of fresh mint from the garden, and a few thin slices of lemon. Then I carried it outside to the old stone wall where the afternoon sun lingers the longest….
I woke this morning fully intending to finish tidying the pantry. Instead, I found flour on the windowsill, rosemary tucked into the grain of the cutting board, and a single heel of yesterday’s bread waiting beneath a tea towel. The shelves are still a little crooked. Books are stacked where they probably shouldn’t be, and…
There has been a great deal of discussion this week about a loaf of rosemary bread. As the cottage’s Senior Supervisor of Domestic Affairs, I feel it is important to clarify a few things. First of all… I was present. This is an often-overlooked but absolutely essential part of baking. Someone must ensure the flour…
Yesterday afternoon, while I was watering the little rosemary on the kitchen windowsill, I caught myself smiling. Not because of the rosemary itself—though it does smell wonderfully hopeful—but because I’d remembered the flour-smudged recipe card tucked safely on the kitchen table. Some recipes ask to be planned. This one simply waited. The afternoon was quiet,…
