The Porch Knows It’s Almost Moonflower Time

The porch has started expecting me around sunset.
The kettle whistles.
The lantern is lit.
The same blanket finds the same chair.
Smokey inspects the steps before declaring them acceptable for sitting.
And together we wander out to the old garden gate to see if the moonflowers have decided tonight is the night.
Not yet.
Just one blossom has loosened its petals ever so slightly, as if it’s stretching after a long afternoon nap.

It doesn’t feel disappointing.
Some things become sweeter simply because they refuse to hurry.
So we stayed a little while anyway.
The tea stayed warm.
The crickets sang.
The sky slowly turned the color of blueberries.
And that felt like enough magic for one evening.
