The Tea Shelf Knows More Than I Do

After yesterday’s adventures with the tea shelf, I decided it deserved a proper visit instead of a hurried tidy.
There are some places in a home that quietly become companions.
The reading chair.
The windowsill where herbs reach for the morning light.
The old kettle with its familiar whistle.
And, somehow, the tea shelf.
I don’t think I’ve ever arranged it the same way twice.
The jars seem to migrate of their own accord.

Chamomile prefers the front whenever I’ve had a busy week.
Peppermint has an uncanny habit of appearing whenever my thoughts become a little too loud.
The lavender always hides until I decide I’ve run out.
Rosemary, however, never wanders far.
It stands patiently in its little glass jar as though it has all the time in the world.
This morning, I reached for it almost without thinking.
The moment I loosened the lid, the whole kitchen filled with its bright, familiar scent.
It smelled like warm bread, open windows, and evenings that don’t ask anything of you.
I smiled before I realized why.
The recipe card.
Yesterday, it had felt like a happy little surprise.
Today, it felt like an invitation.
Not every recipe needs to be made immediately.
Sometimes it’s enough to remember that it’s waiting.
So instead of gathering flour and mixing bowls, I simply added a tiny sprig of rosemary beside my teacup.
The kettle sang.
Steam curled toward the ceiling.
The herbs caught the morning light.
Smokey wandered into the kitchen, sniffed the rosemary with great suspicion, and decided the teacup was considerably more interesting.

He settled into the warm patch of sunlight on the floor and supervised my second cup of the morning with half-closed eyes.
A very demanding position.
As I sat there, I realized tea has never really been about the tea.
It is about the moment before the day gathers speed.
The moment when the cottage is quiet.
When the kettle is the loudest thing in the room.
When there is still enough time to notice the way sunlight settles across the table or how the herbs smell after opening their jars.
Tea is simply the excuse.
The real magic is remembering to pause long enough to be there for it.
Today’s cup didn’t solve every problem.
It didn’t answer any difficult questions.
But it did make the cottage feel a little warmer.
And sometimes that is more than enough.
After all, every good loaf of bread begins by waiting patiently.
Perhaps good days do, too.
