A Forgotten Tin of Seeds

This morning, I finally finished tidying the pantry.

Well… mostly.

There was one last basket tucked onto the highest shelf that I’d been avoiding all week. When I reached for it, a little metal tin slipped free and landed on the floor with the softest clink.

Inside were seed packets.

Some were neatly labeled in my handwriting.

Chamomile.

Calendula.

Bee Balm.

Others had faded with time until I could barely make out the words.

And one tiny envelope simply read…

“For next summer.”

I couldn’t remember writing it.

I stood there smiling for a long moment, wondering what hopeful version of myself had tucked it away.

Perhaps she trusted I’d find it exactly when I needed to.

I carried the little tin outside and set it on the garden bench beside my tea. The summer flowers swayed in the breeze, the bees hummed happily among the lavender, and Smokey inspected the tin with all the seriousness of someone reviewing very important paperwork.

Some seeds are planted in the earth.

Others are planted in our hearts.

They wait quietly until the season is right.

Maybe hope works the same way.

I think I’ll keep the little tin nearby for a while.

Just as a reminder that even the things we forget can bloom when they’re ready.
