The Bread Was Worth the Mess

I woke this morning fully intending to finish tidying the pantry.
Instead, I found flour on the windowsill, rosemary tucked into the grain of the cutting board, and a single heel of yesterday’s bread waiting beneath a tea towel.
The shelves are still a little crooked. Books are stacked where they probably shouldn’t be, and I moved the same basket three different times without actually putting anything away. Smokey inspected my progress from a safe distance, offering several thoughtful looks that suggested the entire operation could have been avoided with a proper afternoon nap. He supervised every loaf without contributing so much as a whisker of actual labor.
Before long, the kettle began to sing. The dough rose better than expected, and the whole cottage smelled of warm rosemary, toasted crust, and butter melting into fresh slices that disappeared as quickly as they cooled. Somewhere between kneading the dough and pouring another cup of tea, I forgot all about the pantry.
